 Child safety in the home is primary concern of mine. As a Professional Firefighter in the Jacksonville Fire/Rescue Dept (JFRD), in a rapidly growing city approaching one million people. I see many accidents in the home that were preventable. Please allow me to assist you with identifying current and potential hazards within and outside your home.

A few items to consider:

1) properly covered outlets & switches

2) properly grounded outlets

3) properly installed  ground fault interrupter (GFI) in the bathrooms, kitchen, garage & outside

4) smoke detectors, carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, low oxygen alarm's placement & functioning correctly

5) upstairs railings/balconies with the proper spacing

6) stairs with proper rise and handrails securely fastened

7) gates securely placed at the top & bottom of stairs

8) unsteady furniture secured to the wall

9) water heater set to a non scalding temperature

10) door locks installed higher than a child's reach

11) aging outside playgrounds, considering chain and bolt replacements 

12) caged trampolines

13) properly fenced pools with alarms and locks out of a child's reach

14) glass doors on fireplaces

15) if fireplace hearths are elevated they should be padded

16) child proof locks on cabinet doors & drawers
